Prelude to a Secret Wedding

Thoughts on Marriage

Gloria
“For me, it’s something that started when I was young. My mom and dad were very happy and loved each other deeply. I always dreamed of having a family—something like that. So, getting married was one of my first wishes as a child.”

Irene
“My parents divorced when I was very young, so marriage was never something really important to me. I didn’t grow up surrounded by strong examples of lasting marriages, so I never felt motivated to get married. But when I met Gloria, that changed. I understood what commitment, discipline, and the desire to be with someone truly meant. That was the moment I freed myself from the old idea I had of marriage. I am so happy this is now manifesting. I’m truly happy I am getting married today.

How they met

Irene continues,
The first memory I have of seeing her physically was one night she came to me and said, “Oh wow, you cut your hair.” After that, I asked you out, remember? I asked you to walk your dog with me—like, we could walk our dogs together. And afterward, we grabbed some breakfast… and so it was. Since it was so easy to talk to each other, I thought, “Oh… I think we could get along.”

Gloria
“Well, after that, I had one of the most beautiful friendships ever. Because every time, every day, it was a new experience with her. It was something new for me. At first, because she was talking about energy, the universe, and things I couldn’t understand. But I tried to get close. Little by little, I started speaking a new language—one that inspired me – that’s definitely changed my life.”

Irene
“Yeah, we had a friendship for two years. We would tell each other everything—who we were dating, going out with, their new girlfriend, housework, trouble at work, other friendships, all the ups and downs… And we really got to know each other. We really did. That’s how our relationship started, from a friendship to a beautiful, beautiful, wonderful relationship. We moved in together two months later—like old ladies! Once we moved in, we never moved out. We just continued. So now it’s been two years living together—learning how to create harmony in our home, how to nurture a family, how to integrate our habits, how to give each other space, and at the same time—how to share it. It’s been really fun. I feel like we are already, in a way, living like we’re married.”

Enter The Officiant

We met María Félix a year ago at La Noche de la Iguana, which was held for La Catrina Cantina owner Juan Alvarado’s birthday.

It was curious because we didn’t tell anyone we intended to marry. So I remember we approached her after I sang. María Félix came up to congratulate me, and we sat together and talked. From the first moment we were sharing, comfortable enough to share things that are a bit more… things you don’t tell just anyone, a bit more private. And with her, that sense of trust was there from the beginning.

That’s how we ended up talking about marriage a year ago. Maria Felix told us she was an officiant and offered to perform our ceremony. We were so happy and couldn’t believe how the universe was working to make everything fall into place, to align everything so this could happen. And right there, in that same little corner, is exactly where we would get married; it’s a deeply meaningful place for us.

We had taken a trip there specifically, about a year or so earlier. We were sitting around a bonfire during that trip when I saw a shooting star falling. Irene asked me, “What do you wish for?” At that moment, I was going through a hard time, and I remember looking at her and saying, “Honestly? I don’t wish for anything. I don’t want anything other than what I have right here.” With that realization, I said, “Wow. This is really all I want.” That’s when our romance started to grow.

So, Mayto became symbolic, even before it was the place of our wedding. We always say there’s something magical about it—every time we go, something extraordinary happens in Mayto. Mayto Mágico.
