A young star shines bright in Puerto Vallarta, a city known for its vibrant culture and artistic soul. His working/stage name is Angeloo — born Angel Gerardo Covarrubias Cabrera — and, at 12 years old, just this past March 30, he’s captivating audiences with a voice that carries maturity, emotion, and an astonishing range far beyond his years.
Angeloo’s love affair with music began early. At just five, when many kids are still learning how to tie their shoelaces, he memorized lyrics from the K-pop world – learning Love Scenario by IKON, in Korean, no less. Inspired by the eclectic sounds from video games like Fortnite, his musical journey started at home. Angeloo says video games have also helped him master the English language.
Self-taught and fiercely determined, Angeloo’s voice began turning heads in his community. But his story wasn’t always a straight line toward stardom.
When he was seven, Angeloo stepped away from music to pursue taekwondo, displaying the same discipline and dedication he would later bring back to his musical path. But at nine, during a tough time for his family, he turned once again to the healing power of song.
With only his father, Oscar, by his side, Angeloo began singing on public buses, performing for passengers across Puerto Vallarta. These humble beginnings, far from the spotlight, helped him find his confidence, sharpen his technique, and cultivate a connection with everyday listeners — the kind that no classroom or concert hall could teach.
A couple of years ago, Angeloo began showing up with his dad at Open Mic at the now sadly defunct Incanto. Within weeks, word had spread about the little Mexican ten-year-old kid who could sing Mozart perfectly in German and that he could learn and sing any song in any language in mere days. As luck would have it, the organizers of an upcoming talent contest were in the audience at Incanto one night and encouraged Angeloo to throw his hat in the ring.
He did just that, and in 2024, Angeloo’s talent received formal recognition when he won “So, You Think You Can Rise,” a talent competition to find emerging artists in Puerto Vallarta. This victory opened opportunities to perform at local popular venues like La Catrina Cantina and Nacho Daddy.
Another standout moment came during the 2023 Puerto Vallarta Pride Parade, where he delivered a heart-stirring rendition of “We Are the World.” The performance was a powerful blend of music and message, a young voice echoing themes of unity and love.
Angeloo cites Michael Jackson, The Weekend, Shakira, and Juan Gabriel as his biggest influences – a mix that mirrors the diversity of his own musical identity.
This year, Angeloo released his debut single Superstar now available on Spotify and other streaming platforms. The track marks his official entrance into the music industry. The start of a long, impactful career.
Angeloo is more than a child singer. He’s a symbol of passion, perseverance, and what’s possible when talent meets heart. In a city filled with music, he’s creating his own sound — and inspiring others to follow their dreams, no matter how young they are.
As his voice continues to soar, one thing is clear: Angeloo isn’t just the future of music in Puerto Vallarta – he is a star in the makng, ready for the world stage.
Between school and practicing new songs into the night with the help of his father, Angeloo needs to work; he needs to be challenged. That’s where you come in!
With the rains on their way and the already scaled-back performances at Act2, Coco, The Palm, Nacho Daddy, and La Catrina, consider having Angeloo entertain your guests for a cocktail party, potluck dinner, barbeque, or reunion. You could set the genre, say, a Country and Western theme, an all-80s night, or a Goth gathering (Angeloo would LOVE that!) Or just have him and his dad arrive at your house or condo with an avalanche of music. Angeloo told me he takes two days maximum to learn a song in a foreign language, and he has been complimented on his German by visiting tourists! There is nothing he can’t master.
If you want a preview, catch Angeloo live at La Catrina Cantina every Wednesday night at 8 pm; you can thank me later.
