Meet Héctor, Abraham and Eduardo

Héctor’s Story
My name is Héctor. I was born in Nayarit and raised in Tabasco, Mexico—a region filled with rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and a warmth that echoes through its people. However, my vibrant upbringing took an unexpected turn when I entered a relationship as an adult and learned that my partner was an undetectable carrier of HIV. This revelation changed everything for me. It was a moment that filled my heart with panic and dread. Fear took over—I was convinced that I would be infected, and my world felt like it was tumbling down around me.

In those initial days, uncertainty clouded my mind. I was overwhelmed with questions. What did it mean for my health? What were the implications for our relationship? Could I still have a fulfilling life? Despite the chaos inside me, I sought any information I could find about living with an undetectable partner. That’s when a friend introduced me to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, and how it could act as a shield against HIV transmission. This revelation sparked a glimmer of hope within me, transforming my perspective ever so slightly.

Yet, the journey to access this preventive measure was daunting. The waiting felt interminable, and although I was excited to learn more, the weight of fear and uncertainty still pressed heavily on my chest. I recall countless sleepless nights filled with what-ifs and a haunting anxiety about my future. The fear of the unknown can be paralyzing, and I was caught in its grip.

Finally, the day of my appointment arrived. As I stepped into the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center, a wave of emotion washed over me. The atmosphere was charged with warmth and acceptance, completely contrasting the turmoil I had felt since learning of my partner’s status. The care and support I received during my visit were incredible. The staff at the center offered more than just medical information; they provided a nurturing environment that fostered emotional support, allowing me to understand my situation comprehensively.

During my conversations with the dedicated team, I found it easier to let go of my fears. They spoke to me with compassion, reassuring me that being with an undetectable partner did not mean I was destined to face health challenges. Their commitment to addressing harmful misconceptions helped me break free from the chains of stigma and shame that had initially enveloped my sexuality. I was finally beginning to embrace who I was, as well as the love I felt for my partner.

With each visit to the center, I learned how to take care of myself holistically, both physically and emotionally. I felt empowered to stay on top of my health, which was liberating. I knew I was no longer alone in this journey; my community stood behind me, ready to support and uplift me. The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center has been there for me every step of the way—not just as a medical facility but as a sanctuary where I could converse openly, ask questions, and express my concerns.

Through this supportive environment, I learned about PrEP and its life-saving benefits and garnered a sense of belonging that I had never fully experienced before. The center provided a safe space where I could share my journey with others, engage in meaningful dialogues about health and wellness, and find solidarity with those who had faced similar challenges.

Abraham’s Story
My name is Abraham Castro, and I’m from Morelia, Michoacan, but I’ve called Puerto Vallarta my home for the last three years. Living in this vibrant city has given me the unique opportunity to embrace an openly gay life, something that would be more difficult in other regions of Mexico. The acceptance and diversity here have allowed me to expand my horizons and meet individuals from various backgrounds. Many of them are from the US and Canada, and hearing their experiences of living openly has inspired me and encouraged me to reflect on my own journey.

Earlier this year, I learned about the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center, which became essential to my life. This discovery came shortly after the non-profit organization previously providing PrEP services in Puerto Vallarta ceased its operations. Luckily, I had already been a PrEP user for the past two years, allowing me to continue my regimen with the support of the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center since February.

The services provided at the center are amazing, and they should be more widely known within the community. Whether it’s schools, government offices, or other organizations, spreading the word about the center’s offerings is crucial. With their friendly demeanor and unwavering support, the staff creates an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. They understand the nuances of our community and do their very best to ensure individuals receive the information they need without any stigma.

Many of my friends from other parts of Mexico are still unaware of PrEP and how it can effectively prevent HIV transmission. This ignorance can lead to unnecessary fear and stigma, holding many back from seeking help. I often find myself discussing PrEP with them, emphasizing its importance. I want them to know that they, too, can take proactive steps toward safeguarding their health. Sharing my positive experiences at the center plays a key role in bridging the awareness gap.

Eduardo Figueroa’s Story
Eduardo is a talented professional makeup artist and an integral part of our community. He has been involved with the center since its inception. “I really like how they treat you because they always greet you with a big smile,” Eduardo shared. “Every person who is part of the center tries to get to know you so that you don’t feel like you’re outside the community.” This sentiment captures what the center stands for—a network of care where everyone is welcomed with open arms.

Eduardo is also a PrEP user, and he appreciates the ongoing health screenings and blood tests that the center provides. “At each visit, they do blood tests to help me continue my treatment, and it’s always nice to see the people who care for us there—without any judgmental looks.” Such an environment is vital to healing and empowerment. Eduardo’s experiences remind us of the profound impact compassionate care can make in the lives of individuals.

The support the Gay+ Community Center provides is instrumental in ensuring that people like Héctor, Abraham, and Eduardo can access necessary medications, compassionate care, and a community that embraces everyone wholeheartedly.

It’s this sense of belonging that motivates supporting one another, educating, and lifting one another up. This generosity creates a ripple effect, giving hope to many who navigate similar challenges and struggles.

The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center is a testament to the power of community, support, and love, and it stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for us all.
